In a ground breaking initiative, delegates from around the globe, including youth representatives, government officials, educators, civil society organizations, UN bodies and financial institutions, including Mobaderoon, convened in Utrecht, the Netherlands, from November 1-3, 2023, for the Global Social and Financial Skills Conference, hosted by Aflatoun International. At the conference the AFLATOUN – AFLATEEN of Mobaderoon was presented as a best practice.

The conference uncovered a serious shortage of basic life skills and financial literacy among children and youth in many countries, including Syria. The conference focused on discussing practical strategies and successful programs to ensure more children and young people globally gain these crucial skills.

The conference culminated in the creation of the Utrecht Declaration and Commitment to Action, a document drafted together by the participants, emphasizing the crucial role of social and financial education in shaping the future of education.

Building on the United Nations Secretary General’s Vision Statement on Transforming Education, the Utrecht Declaration recognizes the evolving needs of today’s children and youth in a rapidly globalizing world. It positions social and financial education as a catalyst for cultivating responsible global citizens who understand the intricate links between social issues and economic challenges.

The declaration underscores the shortcomings of current education systems in effectively addressing the social, environmental, and economic challenges faced by children worldwide. It emphasizes the integral role of social and financial education in contributing to various Sustainable Development Goals, including ending poverty, advancing health and well-being, promoting quality education, fostering gender equality, enhancing employability, addressing inequities, and confronting climate change challenges.

The Utrecht Declaration, released on 20 November, serves as a testament to the shared commitment of global advocates, including Mobaderoon from Syria, to equip young generations with the skills and knowledge necessary to navigate an ever-changing world. Together, they advocate for a future where every child has access to quality social and financial education, fostering a more sustainable and globally aware society in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals. Mobaderoon encourages other organizations to join the movement of empowering children and youth in Syria with essential social and financial skills.
