The 9759th session of the Security Council was held on October 23, 2024, to discuss the situation in the Middle East, with a focus on Syria. The session included political and humanitarian briefings presented by Special Envoy Geir Pedersen and the Director of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, Edem Wosornu. Additionally, a representative of Syrian civil society, Abir Haj Ibrahim, delivered a speech on community reconciliation. She called for intensified international diplomatic efforts, initiatives, and effective, coordinated mediations to resolve the escalating conflict. She also emphasized expanding dialogues to address fundamental issues for achieving positive peace. She concluded her speech with the following plea:
My appeal to you today is simple: Let us end the violence. Let us engage in a profound dialogue about the sanctions that stifle our aspirations. Let us invest in diplomacy at all levels, from local dialogues to international negotiations. Most importantly, let us ensure that the Security Council fulfills its responsibility as a guardian of peace, bringing hope, reassurance, and dignity to all.
